Inspired by the rugged, unspoiled beauty of Northern Cape Breton Island, "Down North" is a tribute to the magic of places like Sugar Loaf, Capstick, and Meat Cove. The memories behind this candle are so special to me, I recall driving along the Cabot Trail with my Aunt who is from "down north", she introduced us to so many magical spots, scenic views and exciting stories. What a special part of our island. So of course, I had to create a candle with a scent blend that captures the essence of the ocean breeze and the rustic charm of coastal life.
The fragrance, a harmonious blend of balsam fir, representing the verdant forests; orange, echoing the vibrant sunsets over the ocean; and eucalyptus, reminiscent of the fresh, invigorating air that fills your lungs and rejuvenates your spirit. This blend is not just a fragrance; it's an authentic portrait of Cape Breton's northern shores.
A local friend (shoutout to Khozie) helped me to translate the idea of Down North into the Gaelic phrase "rach sìos gu tuath", the Gaelic words embody the spirit of this candle. Translating to “traveling north while following the ocean currents,” it reflects a deep connection to the sea, a respect for nature's rhythms, and a nod to the island's rich Gaelic heritage. It travels back to an era where the Gulf Stream's winds were the guiding force for sailors, a reminder of our connection to the past and the timeless beauty of the sea.
